Customer Review: Proprietary data cable / headphones !?!?
This review is meant for those of you who like to upload your own software / music / images onto your phone and listen to music with it. The Samsung / t-mobile redesigned the data output/input for the katalyst so that it doesn’t work with regular samsung cables, meaning you must buy a new $25 data cable. Further more, there is NO OPTION to use regular headphones with this phone. There’s no output for sound, and there’s no adapter available to allow you to plug regular headphones in. Your only option is to buy crappy samsung earbuds. I found this upsetting. If you’re not at all interested in these things, the katalyst is a decent phone with good calling capability and battery life.

Customer Review: Fun, Good-Looking, and Functional!
I received this phone for Christmas. It is my first-ever cellphone, so obviously I was very excited about it. Surprisingly, this phone is very small. I know that looking at the commercials it seems quite large, but it is actually about the size (length-wise) as the spacebar on a keyboard. Flipping open the phone in a switchblade-like fashion, you see a very simple but artistic display. By clicking the center button, you are given a list of six simple options: Music (about 1.8 GB which can easily be synched using Windows Movie Maker), Get It Now (ringtones, games), Messaging (txt, pix messages), Contacts, Recent Calls, and Settings&Tools. The options, when highlighted, show well-designed graphics relating to the item (ex. CD and music note for Music). Honestly, before I continue rambling on, this is a great phone. Just take my word for it and buy it, and you won’t regret it. Having to turn it upside-down to open is not a nuisance; it becomes second-nature. Advice: - Listen to the pre-set ringtones before buying any from the shop for $3. This phone actually comes with some cool techno/hip-hop beats. - Purchase the phone shell from Verizon Wireless. Believe me, with a phone this nice-looking, you won’t want to get it scratched. - Don’t purchase any games other than Tetris, Pac-Man, or other simple arcade games. The screen and keypad are too small for more sophisticated games. - If you want to listen to music using a standard pair of headphones, you will need to buy a 2.5mm-3.5mm headphone adapter. I got this one: Headphone Adapter for Samsung SCH-A890, and it works like a charm.
Customer Review: Great Phone
This phone is great. It has completely replaced my MP3 player, it holds the same amount of music. I love that you can play the music out of the speaker without headphones. The sound quality when doing that isn’t the best, but it’s perfect sometimes when I would have otherwise been tangled in headphone wires. And if you are listening to music with the headphones, and you get a call, all you need to do it press the button on the headphones and it answers the call and the headphones become a hands free set. It’s perfect. Some people have asked me about texting on it, because it seems so small. I have not had any problems with this, the buttons are actually really nice, and texting is not hard on it despite it’s size. Battery life is great, it lasts much longer than my old phone, even when it’s used as an MP3 player also. Transferring music is simple, just plug it into the computer and it syncs like any other MP3 player with windows media player. I love how it flips open, although I often forget which way it needs to be facing and try to open it the wrong way. That is actually my ONLY complaint about this phone. The screen is upside down when it’s closed, so you have to turn it around to read who is calling you, and then turn it back around to open it. But that is so minor, and I have figured out how to turn it around and open it at the same time, so it doesn’t really bother me anymore. My only other wish for this phone would be being able to set one of your mp3s as a ringtone. But again, so minor it does not even register as a complaint for me. Overall this is a great phone and I would recommend it to anyone who hates carrying around both and MP3 player and a phone, as this will become both.

Customer Review: Great wine color and good phone
First I have to admit, I love the red color. Its a dark red so it looks black at night, but the main reason, the red Blackjack II has a snake looking back that has a firm grip. perfect, no finger prints! The phone works great. I had other smartphones, but this one is slick and has a nice glossy screen. More color as well. It was easy to set up email and other applicants unlike my other phones, were I actually had to open numerous forums to figure things out. Lastly, everything else is great, but the GPS is the main reason I got it. I am out in the boonies and it still works like a charm. I recommend getting a car charger because the GPS kills the battery. but I use this thing as a GERMIN, its perfect.
Customer Review: Nice Phone but not yet PERFECTION!!!!
This is a very nice phone and a better choice over the black model as the black Samsung BlackJack 2 gathers alot of finger prints. The back of the PDA is a completely different material then the one on the black version. Dont let the RED offend your BUTCH man hood. Its a very drak tint of a red. No sign of a GIRLY phone at all. Anyways its a nice phone but i hate the Windows menu option. I wish you had a choice between the Windows and Samsung version of the menu screen. Unfortunately all you can do is change the menu style the way Windows has it layed out for you. The camera is really nice and so is the camcorder, but considering that so many international GSM phones have over 5.0 megapixels, i think its time the US get above a 3.0 as well. the call quality is really clear as well. AT&T has come such a long way since the 1990’s. The web browser is really fast, i live in New York City so i wasnt expecting slow speeds since i’m at the mecca of technology central. Im very pleased with my purchase and i got it for 49.99 and Radio Shack and the sales rep was really nice giving it to me at the promo price since i’m not a new customer, it was a 2 year upgrade. The promo price was only for new clients. He was also nice enough 2 not charge me a data package as i told him i was in a hurry and would miss my bus. So i got a total bargain PDA smart phone for only 49.99. AT&T data packages are really expensive. I’d rather have gotten this phone for 0.1 on Amazon but they make purchasing phones so complicated. Compairing this to the BlackJack 1, its only a cosmetic upgrade, nothing groundbreaking has been added in except a larger screen and the scroll wheel which i dont care about as it seems unresponsive to me. The also removed the scroll wheel on the side of the phone from the 1st version. Overall i love the phone just wish the new Samsung PDA had a touch screen as the qwerty keyboard is getting out dated.

Customer Review: OK phone
Our contract was up (fiance and I) and I got this phone, she got the Sony w580i. I am not a power user (don’t use 3G or internet),I use the phone for 3 basic functions: make calls, listen to music, and sync up to outlook calendar. I had a Razr before this phone. Things I like: Music Player: I have a 2 gig microSD card and some bluetooth stereo headphones. The trade-off here is sound quality vs. no wires. The quality isn’t as good as a dedicated mp3 player with wired headphones but I need to be mobile for my job so I’ll take the wireless. Camera: Compared to the Razr I had (no megapixel) its great. Things I don’t like: Compared to my fiance’s Sony, online support sucks. I had to search and search for some sort of phone-computer sync program. There isn’t one specific for this phone. I found one for a different one and it worked. Sony has a great website with all kinds of games, etc. The main reason I wanted to sync was the Outlook Calendar. Unfortunately, there is a character limit to what the phone can hold and its not very much. Messages get cut off and the message itself scrolls really slowly. There is probably a way to scroll faster but I haven’t found out how. On the Razr it was really easy to make a song a ringtone. With the Samsung you have to create some sort of group and then assign a song. It’s too much of a hastle and I haven’t done it yet. With this phone, you have to buy a USB cable (Ebay, $5). With the Sony it comes with this and you get headphones also. I didn’t get the Sony because I thought it was too flashy, but I would probably get it instead now. This phone wins out on 3G (if you need it) though, and it doesn’t have expensive proprietary flash memory. Its not a bad phone, but for the features I use, it’s not a great phone.
Customer Review: An okay phone, some small feature issues.
I’ve had this phone for about a week, and I am planning on taking it back. The battery life is barely two hours of talk time, meaning I have to recharge my phone every day. When I am in silent mode, talking on the phone, and I have low battery, the phone vibrates against my face and the person on the other end of the line can hear it as well. Then it continues to vibrate every five minutes (whether on or off the phone) until I plug in the battery. The other feature that I cannot stand is the speaker phone. When I have speaker phone engaged, the person on the other end of the line can hear an annoying echo of them talking. It’s a pretty phone (I have the lime one), but that’s about it. I haven’t played around with the MP3 player. The camera and video takes okay quality for a phone. I guess I could care less about those features. Maybe I just got a bad phone, but I’m off to find a better one.

Customer Review: Average “free” phone, but speakerphone is low quality.
Here’s another “free” phone from Verizon, with a two-year committment. I don’t like paying for phones because the service costs plenty enough by itself. I needed a new phone because my old Samsung A670 had no speakerphone at all. This U340 has one, but the volume is simply not loud enough to be what I would consider an acceptable speakerphone. With the volume at the highest setting, it’s just barely OK if there’s very little ambient noise in the background. Two friends of mine have LG phones and their speakerphones are loud and have good voice fidelity. But, each of them had to shell out about $40 for their phones, even with a plan committment. What I do like is the navigation through the menu items, which is quite a bit better on this phone than my old Samsung A670. Very user-friendly, even to a person who doesn’t use a cellphone as a plaything. Transmission and reception is about average compared with other cellphones. To a much greater extent than most people realize, these characteristics are controlled more by what kind of equipment the antenna sites have and how they are configured for coverage. You can have a hooptie iPhone with sucky call performance just like you can with these cell phone company freebies if the coverage is marginal. I haven’t had any problems with the battery so far, but I’ve only had the phone a couple of weeks. I must say, it is quite small when compared to any other cellphone battery I’ve ever seen. The camera seems to take better quality pictures than my old A670 did, and there’s no flash. This is a disappointment to some people, but I’d rather not have a flash that may draw unwelcome attention to it and to me. Physically moving the phone up and down in the air changes how light or dark the image capture will be, and I’ve found this camera will take OK pictures in even fairly low light situations. All in all, if you’re a cellphone “power user” go get a hooptie name brand latest-gen phone. If you are oriented toward simple functionality and economy, consider selecting this from the “free” phone list at Verizon. The price is right! +++ Additional comment after having the phone for two months +++ The battery in this phone is really the best I’ve ever seen in terms of strength and length of service between charges. After seeing other reviewers complain quite a bit about the battery, the amazing battery performance surprised me, and I thought I should add this comment. So, yes, the speakerphone is a tinny, low-volume bust, but the battery is definitely a big cut-above that of any other cellphone I’ve used.
Customer Review: great phone but terrible battery charge
I just wanted a simple cell phone without all the fancy things. This Samsung phone would have been perfect. Small size, cute, sturdy, etc. But, the battery charge was unpredictable. It would stay charged for only 12-36 hrs, even though I talked on it for about 15-20 mins total. My previous Samsung phone did not have this problem. Verizon replaced the battery, but there was no improvement. Since quite a number of people have made this complaint, I wonder if there is a bad batch of Samsung U340 phones. After a month, I eventually switched over to a different brand.
