Samsung’s M510 improves upon its predecessor, the M500, with a more organically rounded design as well as Bluetooth stereo headphone streaming–perfect for enjoying untethered tunes purchased through Sprint’s Music Store. It operates on Sprint’s North American CDMA voice network, as well as on Sprint’s Mobile Broadband Network (EV-DO), which enables you to quickly access audio, video and data applications. Other phone features include a 1.3 megapixel camera and camcorder, GPS turn-by-turn directions, MicroSD memory card expansion, and voice-activated dialing.
The M510 packs a lot of multimedia power into a small package, including tunes from the Sprint Music Store and streaming video via Sprint TV (EV-DO service required). |
Supporting the EV-DO high-speed data standard, the M510 is fully compatible with Sprint’s Power Vision service. With Power Vision, you can download and stream high-quality video, straight onto your phone. Enjoy full-color video clips or live TV of the latest news, sports, and entertainment from brands you know, like CNN, Fox, The Weather Channel, NFL Mobile, and more. Power Vision also serves as a portal for enhanced games. Where coverage is available, EV-DO connectivity provides average download speeds ranging from 400 to 700 Kbps, with peak rates up to 2 Mbps.
Sprint’s music service is another EV-DO-powered service that makes the M510 all the more desirable. With the Sprint Music Store, your phone is a music player, letting you buy, download, and then jam out wherever you are with new songs or old favorites. Offering a growing selection of more than 1.6 million songs, the store provides you two copies of each song–one for the phone and another for the PC, as well as the ability to burn songs to a CD using Windows Media Player. Save your songs to a memory card with a capacity that’s right for you. You can even pause to take a call without missing a beat.
It also includes a 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and an external display that shows caller ID and the time. |
This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity, and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, audio/video remote control, and printing. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking (DUN)–surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server–using Sprint’s Mobile Broadband Network. And when connected to a Bluetooth headset, caller information for incoming calls will be spoken through the Bluetooth device. Decide to answer the call without ever looking at your phone.
The 1.3-megapixel camera shoots still photos in four resolutions (from 176 x 220 to 1280 x 960) as well as video clips with sound. It offers a 4x digital zoom, white balance and brightness settings, and the ability to frame photos right in the phone. It also provides support for PictBridge technology so you can print your photos without the need of a PC. The built-in digital audio player is compatible with MP3 and AAC/AAC+ formats, and includes the ability to create playlists on the phone.
The M510 sports a 176 x 220-pixel color display with over 262K colors, and it also includes an external supplementary LCD (96 x 96 pixels) that can display pictures, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The phone comes with 16 MB of memory, which is expandable via MicroSD memory cards The internal phonebook will hold up to 500 entries with each contact entry providing up to 5 phone numbers in addition to an email address, a URL, memo, nickname, caller ID photo, and selected ringtone. You can store up to 99 speed dialing numbers in contacts database as well. Up and down buttons for volume control are placed on the left side, and camera controls are included on the right side of the phone, as is the memory card slot, while most of the phone’s features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset’s control pad.
The phone ships with built-in polyphonic ringtones, but for those times when you want to be discreet, there’s a vibrating alert. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear, and advanced voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family, and associates easy. Simply say the name or number of the person you want to call and the number is dialed automatically without using the keypad.
A messaging multitasker, the M510 supports Sprint PCS picture and video mail services, enabling you to shoot high quality pictures and video clips with sound and instantly send them to email addresses and or other Sprint PCS phones that are compatible with picture and video mail services. Or upload them to the Sprint PCS pictures Web site to create albums. You can also use the M510 to send and receive email, exchange text messages, or join a chat room. Plus, the M500 features an embedded SMS voice messaging client, a feature that allows you to easily send voice messages to other wireless users or any working email address. T9, a predictive text entry system, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit–a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
The M510 also sports an airplane mode feature, which allows the user to safely use the non-wireless functions of a phone (such as music, games, or organizer functions) on an airplane during flight. This phone is also GPS enabled, allowing you to receive audible and visual turn-by-turn driving directions, map your location, or conduct local searches direct from your handset. With a USB connection, the M510 can also be used as a mass storage device.

Customer Review: Good Phone except for power connector
I just got this phone and, in general, find it fits my requirements. My main issues with the phone are as follows: 1)The power connector is really awkward. For some reason Samsung has been un-improving its power connectors over the years. My first Samsung supported a cradle which was ideal. The next had no cradle available but required inserting a 3.5 mm plug on the bottom. Now it gets its power from a mini USB connector which must be inserted with a particular orientation unlike the 3.5 mm plug. The connector is covered with a very flimsy plastic cover that is hard to open. Additionally its on the side making it a two handed operation to disconnect. I am sure the plastic cover will break off one of these days. Perhaps that will be for the better. 2)The phone is really small for my hands. Some may consider this a good thing but the previous models were small but still easy to manipulate. It’s hard to flip open, especially with a single hand. Once opened however, the size doesn’t bother me. 3)Lack of a way to change themes or ring tones without using the extra wireless services. I’m not one of those willing to pay to use internet on my phone. The screen is too small and the keyboard too limited to make surfing the net a worthwhile experience for me. However, this phone requires you to use these extra services for simple things like uploading a ring tone or changing the theme. I should be able to do this over USB from my laptop. Some have also complained about the flat keypad. I see their point but found that after a while, I could click the right button with reasonable accuracy.
Customer Review: Excellent voice quality with all the extras
Bought this for my wife who will mostly just use the voice features, but I occasionally use it for everything else, so this is a perfect hybrid phone. Fits both large and small hands perfectly, great sound quality to calls, highly configurable and fun to use. Battery life is fair, good if you enable power saving option, and excellent if you disable auto-updating of web content and bluetooth.

AT&T customers pay no additional fee to access mobile banking and, because the application resides on the handset, the service is optimized to reduce the number of new page views necessary to complete a transaction. Minimal data usage charges apply and vary based on individual use.

Design

Inside the flip you’ll find a massive, 240 x 320 display supports up to 262,000 colors — plenty of resolution and color depth for your videos and photos. Calling Features
With 80 MB of internal memory, the D830 is designed to hold all the contacts, phone numbers and addresses you can throw at it (up to a 1000 of them, to be precise). A call list remembers your most recent missed, received and dialed calls, and in addition to a vibrating alert, the D830 supports polyphonic ringtones and MP3-based music ringtones. A speakerphone lets you talk hands-free while you’re doing other things, and picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. And because the D830 supports Bluetooth, you can use your favorite wireless headset with it.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The D830 has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages. When used in combination with the phone’s built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun.
Getting on the Internet is easy with the D830, too. It supports the GPRS protocol, as well as the new, high speed EDGE data protocol. There’s also a built-in browser for downloads and mobile Web browsing. A number of handy productivity tools are bundled with the D830 including a voice memo recorder, an alarm clock, a calculator with currency converter, a calendar, and a to-do list. And because the D830 supports the SyncML synchronization standard, you can easily sync your PC-based contacts. There’s even a document viewer for opening attachments, as well as a Bluetooth printing system for printing documents from the handset.
Imaging and Entertainment
The D830’s built-in two-megapixel camera captures stills and video to the phone’s internal memory, or to a microSD memory card. You can use the phone’s TV output to display your photos and videos on a TV screen. Into music? You’re in luck with the D830. Store your favorite MP3-, AAC-, or AAC+-based music on the D830 and listen whenever the feeling strikes you. When you want to jam out in private you can hook up a Bluetooth wireless stereo headset. Lastly, if you want to dress up the D830, picture effects, custom screensavers, backgrounds, and themes can be set to fit your personality.

Customer Review: Cool Phone, great features but a few minor setbacks
if you are really into thin phones.. this is the one for you (thinner than razor) but you’ll have to sacrifice functions such as short batt life (approx 36hrs on standby w/ a few calls)and soft speakerphone volume…and for some you have to get used to the keypad.
Customer Review: Could use more features…
The phone arrived right on schedule from the supplier. I’ve always liked Samsung phones because of their simplicity so I decided to buy the D830. This phone comes with a software CD, data cable, charger cable and headset, which I might add is perfectly equalised and gives off a near “surround-sound system” quality for your music. I received 3 versions of the manaul with the phone in 3 different languages EXCEPT English. Even though the phone is advertised as the ’slimmest’ it’s still a little on the large side in terms of height and width. The volume of the phone itself (without the earpiece) is low outdoors even when you turn up the volume to the maximum, so if you have trouble hearing, you’ll definitely have trouble hearing clearly. When you miss a call, the caller ID on the front of the phone does not alert you. So you can’t see right away that you’ve missed a call unless you open the phone to check. Other than those disadvantages, the phone itself is a good showpiece and overall a trendy design.

Customer Review: can’t customize
i bought this phone w/out looking at the features and i regret ever buying it. i use to have the t809 and that’s 10x better than this. the screen color and resolution are lower than t809. bluetooth doesn’t see any device other than bluetooth headset. (i’ve tested with several phones and a computer with bluetooth) There’s no data setting to transfer file from the computer via data cable. there’s no flash drive. t429 is good is an ok phone but if you want something that you can customize then go with something else.

Customer Review: Broke after 2 months
The power connector on this phone is so fragile that it broke after 2 months. Samsung and ATT offered no replacement, so now I have a useless phone. Samsung support was rude and unfriendly.

Customer Review: Camera=great, phone=bad build quality, bad usability quality, badly organized features, unbelievably bad ring tones
On a good day, I like the camera on this phone. 2M pixels, and it is quite convenient when you don’t have a camera handy, you can whip this phone out and take some pretty decent pictures. That is, if you have enough light. Also, hope you don’t mind the seemingly 20 seconds it takes after you click to take the picture. For a previous Nokia user, the phone’s menu system is jaw-droppingly bad, and the ring tones are just plain crap. Why does Samsung imagine I would want to use the loud ring tones they provide in the phone? Why can’t I remove the crappy background images in the Images folder? Build quality: my front display broke after about a year of use. Now, it won’t show the time in the crappy quality display, but instead show some streaks. I am known for my almost saintly care-taking of my phone. If this happens to my phone, imagine what can happen to normal folks? Lastly, this phone suffers from extremely bad user interface. First, the reception is very bad, and secondly, the keypad does not light up long enough for me to see in the dark. Overall impression: My next phone’s a Nokia. And I am going to get that next phone as soon as possible.
Customer Review: What WAS I thinking?
From the start I should say that I am conflict averse, easily embarrased, and have a hard time saying no. So being in the high-pressure situation of trying to decide on a phone in Radio Shack I am already at an incredible disadvantage. I’m not saying that the salesman should have understood that and taken it into account, but certainly when he offered to let me use HIS own phone to call my wife in another state to ask her advice, well, clearly I would buy anything he recommended. So why did he recommend this one? I tried very carefully to explain my phone needs, my phone fears and my phone desires. Being away from my family for long periods this year–itself an interesting story–I only wanted to be able to talk to them in the evenings and hear their voices in some sort of true-to-life fashion. I am not a phone-friendly man. In fact, I don’t think very highly of men who are. In the past we’ve had pay-as-you-go (or pay-as-you-go-to-he**) phones, and I found the compression of the sound to be unbearable. Everyone sounded like they had been slaughtered, eviscerated, digitized, and stored in thin aluminum tubes by cold hearted aliens. It would break my heart if I were to hear either of my two children’s voices thus distorted and mechanized, as if they were caught in a Harlan Ellison nightmare world. So I tried to explain to this salesman that all I wanted was a phone that had good sound quality. Not features. Sound. Not features. But I think this salesman–actually, more like a salesboy–just didn’t understand someone who would want a phone only for talking to other people with. If I wanted sound quality, why, that must be because I will be listening to some wretched pop music monstrosity that I want to carry around with me 24 hours a day. And so he recommended this phone to me over the LG which, a thousand times a day, I wish oh I WISH I had bought instead. LG stands for “Lucky Goldstar,” and this is one of those marvelous Korean names that we can’t have enough of. Koreans tell me that they believe that a happy or lucky name leads to a happy or lucky business. Certainly it can’t hurt! And lucky gold star is basically three EXTREMELY POSITIVE words crammed into a single title. But I suppose as they got more worldly-wise, the happy folks at Lucky Goldstar found their name a bit mawkish and so they tried to change it to seem a bit more formal, like some German plant with a name like FRGN. But other things I’ve bought from Lucky Goldstar have been wonderful–every bit as lucky as the name would have it–and much less expensive than their less luck-endowed rivals. But this salesboy–more like a salestoddler–was sure that what I wanted was a phone that had a menu with 9 items, five of which I will never use, and one of which I don’t understand. Mostly what they are are little mousetraps of some sort–if you accidently press a button you are not dialing, you are SHOPPING for things you don’t know what they are and as far as I can tell they’re not real. There’s a mall, there’s the media net, the cellular video, and the one thing that might make sense is called “my stuff” but whatever is there, it certainly isn’t my stuff (which is mostly in the garage). I did like the idea of taking pictures, although there is a long delay between when you press the shutter button and when it decides to take the picture, so I have a pretty big collection of people leaving, backs of people’s heads, sky where there just was something interesting and so on. Then of course I couldn’t get the pictures off so I purchased a cord to connect it to the computer; there were all sorts of software problems that were deeply depressing and would make an article in themselves, but I really want to focus on the phone, and the upshot is, that once the software was installed, and I plugged it in to take the photos off, it decided to slurp in the details of every person I had ever known, which it found in some microsoft/NSA type file. Now whenever I want to call my children, I have to scroll through dozens of names of ex-acquaintances: deceased relatives, people I thought were friends but who stabbed me in the back, decent hard working people who couldn’t tread water in the cruel jungle of 2000’s capitalism any more, people I love but have lost somehow. And that salestoddler–salesfetus is more like it–must have known that this was coming. Did he think it would help me detach myself from the world of desires? Or simply bring me down to his level? All I know is, he thought “if he doesn’t actually end up in debt for all the imaginary things he has accidentally purchased, at least he won’t be able to talk to his young children, to wish them good night, without having to think about how time can rip your heart out, just rip it out.”

Customer Review: Nice Phone, Falls Short
Regardless of what one might find online, this phone is beautifully made and it looks good, with some odd irritations. The slanted dialing keys take some getting used to, but are intuitive. They are a welcome sight compared with many PDAs that have their dialing features incorporated into the QWERTY keyboard or in a touchscreen. The SEND/END buttons are on the sides and are easily pressed at the wrong times. The MicroSD memory card has me baffled. The phone will only recognize 2MB cards and will run much slower if you use a larger capacity card. This is a limitation of the phone and not Windows Mobile Pro 6. There are Windows smartphones out there that will handle 8MB cards. There are clumsy hacks that will make the device recognize a 4MB card, if you have the stomach and savvy to pull it off. To top out the memory debaucle, there is plenty of phone here - a standard SD card slot should have been designed into the device. The built-in device RAM/ROM is also substandard. Think of the MicroSD card as the harddrive, the RAM as the equivalent to your desktop/laptop RAM and the ROM as the BIOS. There are phones with twice as much RAM/ROM for similar money. There is no trackball or trackwheel. You are instead forced to use the directional pad on the front cover. The slide-out QWERTY keyboard has nice rubberized keys that feel great to use, but the top row is rather cramped. If Samsung had only designed the slider to come out another
